Chapter Nine

Sleeping Arrangements

After gunning it most of the way, Darwyn shut his headlights and drove slow on the quiet stretch of road leading back to his house. If that little rock-throwing fucker was on his property, he wanted to catch him before he had a chance to flee into the woods, or the lake, or the trees or wherever he went when he wasn’t being a menace. It was enough already.

Aware of his phone buzzing with texts, he fought the urge to check it, determined to keep his eyes focused on the dark road in front of him as his home came into view. Lights on inside, nothing seemed amiss—until he pulled into the driveway and the far side of the house came into view.

Something was clinging to the side of his house. Scratch that—someone was clinging to the side of his house, like an oversized praying mantis, upside down, long silver hair hanging toward the ground. Jesus Christ, there he is. It looked like the tree-rider all right. Whoever this asshole was, he had absolutely no fear. He was up near the peaked roof, no visible ropes or harnesses, and if he dropped right now his skull would crack like an egg. Or at least, a normal person’s skull would crack like an egg.

He cut his engine and as quietly as possible, opened his door and got out of the car, then looked up, hardly able to believe what he was seeing. The guy seemed to be hanging by his feet, somehow keeping them wedged beneath the roof ledge. Palms rested on either side of the glass as he peered through a window. It was the bathroom, Darwyn realized. The upstairs one, where Travis had been enjoying a bath when they left.

Darwyn snatched his phone from his pocket and checked his texts. One from Brett asking where he was. Three from Travis.

‘Are you almost here? I swear he’s crawling on the roof.’

‘Are you close? He was knocking on the windows!’

‘I’m in your bedroom closet. Do you have a gun in here?’

“Fuck.” Darwyn glanced up. He was about to text Travis back when the guy moved, scuttling to the left and peering in the next window down—Darwyn’s bedroom. How the fuck was he doing that?

Quickly, Darwyn shot Travis a text. ‘Stay where you are. I’m outside. Do not move.’

Slipping his phone back in his pocket, he watched as the guy tried prying the window up. Thumb and finger to his lips, Darwyn let out a high sharp whistle.

The man froze at the sound. He did an inverted backbend, pushing himself up on his arms, pale eyes looking down at Darwyn.

“Don’t make me point a gun at you,” Darwyn shouted. “Come on down from there. Nice and slow.”

He fully expected him to scuttle away, attempt escape somehow, but was stunned when the man pushed off the side of the house, tumbled mid-air, and landed on bended legs, eyes on Darwyn.

Darwyn took a step back. He couldn’t help it. People weren’t supposed to move like that, and yeah, he was frightened by this skinny long-haired creature before him.
